• Helena is very sweet, good hearted and a little naive at times. She was born with a tremendous amount of power and responsibility. Helena was hidden away as a baby to protect her from those who would do her harm. Suddenly as she comes to age she is thrust into a world she has never known and expected to be the Damaskiri (Queen) of the Chosen (magical beings). Helena has a lot to learn and figure out but she does it with unwavering determination. One of the tasks Helena is faced with is finding a life mate. There are many suitors that come forth to pledge themselves to her but none of them catch her eye like Von does. Something about him calls to her.
  
  Von has a darkness to him. He’s strong, skilled and deadly. Most people look at Von and think he’s a terrible and untrustworthy man but there is more to him than they want to believe. Imagine his surprise when Helena unexpectedly stands up for him and shows interest in him.
  
  The road they travel together is not an easy one. It’s one peppered with trials and hardships but also filled with love and devotion.
  
  I loved Mother of Shadows. So much so that I went and bought the second book immediately after finishing this one. I’m very glad this author was recommended to me.

  This debut novel by Meg Anne sucked me in from page one! It was also my first read from the fantasy romance genre. We are tossed into a world where magic is everywhere. Helena (along with her magical powers) are kept secret until her 21st birthday, when all is revealed to her by Darrin, her childhood friend/Shield.
  
  Helena, now the Damaskiri, must come forth and discover her magic and rule her people. She will accomplish this with help from her Circle (Advisor, Shield, Sword, Master, Mate), who are there to guide and protect her at all costs.
  This book is filled with fantasy, magic, and romance with a touch of evil lurking between the pages.
  
  I will definitely be recommending this series to everyone I know. Also please keep in mind that this book does end in a cliffhanger, so if you cannot stand them – please wait until book two has been released. I, for one, am patiently waiting for book two !

  I especially love this one and I hope more people will pick it up so I can gush about how much I enjoyed it! This debut novel from Meg Anne has popped her squarely onto my "authors to love" list. She knows how to weave a tale that causes you to truly feel the emotions of the characters.
  
  “He might be, Damaskiri, but aren’t we all made of both shadows and light? Shadows cannot exist without light though, so you cannot have one and not have the other. Just because he may be that side of you does not make him evil.”
  
  First, I enjoyed that this story was a healthy mix of romance and plot. While the romance in this is integral to the progression of the story itself, it is not overbearing and the nature of this romance is similar to that of Rhysand & Feyre and Desmond & Callie.
  
  This story has a great elemental magic system at play. While most Chosen are only blessed with the ability to wield one type of magic, a select few have mastered multiple branches, and only the Damaskiri is blessed with the ability to wield magic from the Spirit branch. This is where our main character, Helena comes in. Helena has recently discovered she is not the ungifted peasant girl she always believed herself to be. Thrown right into the role of Damaskiri after the death of the previous ruler, the story follows Helena discovering the magic hidden within herself and facing the apprehension she has toward the task ahead of her.
  
  "It matters naught what you fear, or that you find yourself wanting. If you were born for this as they say, then you can do whatever is asked of you."
  
  This story has a full cast of unique characters, but I especially found myself loving Darrin and of course, Von. While Darrin's love for Helena is undeniable due to their childhood spent together, it is his loyalty to her and his duty as Shield that garnered him a spot in my heart as a smol cinnamon roll, right next to Dorian Havilliard. <3 I will protect him with my life.
  
  And Von, oh how he fills up that anti-hero spot nicely. He's all sarcasm and power on the outside, but he is tender and compassionate in his love for Helena. Be forewarned that things get a little steamy in this one. Von presents himself to Helena with other motives at play, but finds himself humbled by the discovery that he is her Mate. Honest regarding his inglorious past, Von takes his new role with stride, becoming a pillar for Helena to lean against when she feels weak and a guiding beacon for her soul to cling to. I adore the interaction between these two and their bond with each other.
  
  “All that I am, is yours. Regardless of what it is that brought me to you, I am yours. I belong to you, and I will strive to be worthy of you.”
  
  Lastly, THAT ENDING! OMGAHHHHH. Yes, it is a cliffhanger, but I still loved it nonetheless. I was seething with emotion at the end of this and truly felt the hurt and rage projected by the characters. I've also found myself a new favorite character to hate and despise with a vengeance. While their untrustworthiness was no real secret to me as a reader, their actions at the end were incredibly despicable and I'm pretty certain I'll be wishing them a slow, painful death in the next installment (which I am ready for right now!).
• Started off slow but got very interesting soon... Drawback is that it leaves with the cliffhanger... I can't stand series that don't have the Nextbook already available!! But this is a good serious to keep in mind I hope she doesn't take forever and getting the second book out cuz I'm dying to know what happens!!! This book is about a girl who went from being a nobody wholesome poor girl into being the next ruler of her people and find out she has amazing magic... Also she end up finding the love of her life her mate and she has a heart of gold and she wants to do what's right by her people and overall this takes a whole new take on Magic love stories refreshing you story must read!!
• Meg Anne has me very intrigued w this series. The characters grew on me w each page and i thoroughly enjoyed this book. While we've all read abt magic and class systems before i think this was done in quite a unique way.
  
  While i thought the romance btwn Von and Helena starts off to quickly, there is something charming abt the two pf them. I don't know of it means i have issues but i liked how protective they were of one another and how they both cherish a love they didn't expect.
  
  Helena can be a bit naive at times but its part of her charm. It was a bit frustrating to see her fall for a ploy especially after what she was shown and told. I don't want to say too much and give things away. This is a great read w characters that have depth, a new world and creatures i haven't heard of. I highly recommend it.
