- Mary Anne (Bridges) Fontenot grew up in Covington Louisiana and has spent many years in Lafayette, Louisiana. Her life story is an excellent representation of the era of Late Baby Boomer Catholics in Southern Louisiana (especially Covington) from the perspective of a very good girl and remarkable woman whose faith is her joy! With deep appreciation of her Acadian and Irish Heritage, Mary Ann expresses herself in a very down to earth, but paradoxically very refined manner - so special... a noble artisan -- a product of the high culture of this region represented by the likes of Walker Percy and so many others who have made special contributions to humanity. In many ways, Mary Ann's orientation in the midst of serious illness approaches that of St. Theresa Liseaux -- whose many physical sufferings only brought her closer to God and filled her with the capacity to love others as well. It is also a bit reminiscent of St. Elizabeth Anne Seton who was very much a caregiver to sick and dying members of her family -- and quite a few others. Like Seton, Mary Ann became a widow and went on to do so much good - cherishing people God put in her life. The difference is that Mary Ann was a very devout Catholic from her earliest years and by her mid-30s had become a woman whose orientation was twice her age in maturity -- she very intimately knew and appreciated God's friendship and support - now approaching 60, the fruits of that relationship are a gift to our stressed and shallow culture! The careful reader can see just how much Mary Ann's journey is hallmarked by waves of being drawn closer and closer to Him -- without much sin getting in the way! Her exemplary love of God and the simple pleasures of life is a very heartwarming and edifying grace that I believe she was called to breathe out into print! Read to discover this path and be convinced that among us are examples like Mary Ann who know how to find joy in joining their sufferings to those of Jesus', especially those of His Passion! I highly recommend this book to young and old alike... Boys and Girls -- Men and Women! FAMILY!!! If you are seeking a model for marriage, family, and beautiful friendships beyond - STOP HERE and drink of this fountain! In her own very difficult struggles with health and emotional pain, Mary Ann shines as a beautiful example of holy resignation and loving self-sacrifice -- a beacon of light in our contemporary circumstances morphed into a beautiful, noble manifestation of Theresian Love!
- This warm and loving book made me both smile and cry. The author guides us through five generations of love and faith that continues to this day. Her journey through cancer and four near death experiences illuminates how God given strength and optimism can guide us in good times and bad. I love this book and highly recommend it.
