Can a house built from the ashes of tragedy ever be a place of lasting happiness? Can the hereditary mix of wild gypsy lore, fierce independence, magic and mystery truly settle in a respectable home? The Town House is the first in Norah Lofts' enduringly popular Suffolk Trilogy about the Old Vine at Baildon. Built in the late fourteenth century by Martin Reed, a runaway serf who had defied his master for the woman he loved, the house was to change and grow for six centuries. In its very foundations it held secrets and lies, passionate love and deep despair. The vast scope of The Suffolk Trilogy - continued with The House at Old Vine and The House at Sunset - involves the reader in a fascinating journey through time. In The Town House, Norah Lofts evokes fourteenth- and fifteenth-century life from the perspective of five different characters. Her sympathetic touch and ability to imbue each character with life involves us from the first to the last page. She convincingly recreates the historical era in which each character lives, not merely to set the scene but to add an understanding of why and how they act as they do.

"This beautifully crafted book was recommended to me by an avid reader with a long memory. After reading The Physician, which I had recommended, she said if you enjoyed that you'll also like the Suffolk Trilogy. She was right. It is a generational saga. If you are looking for sweet characters and happily ever after endings, this is not the book for you. While there are plenty of characters to identify with, the author writes about a time in history when life was very hard. Read it and take a step back in time."

The Town House Suffolk Trilogy Norah Lofts 9781905806737 Books Reviews

  • I had looked high and low for this book for many, many years but could not remember the title of the book nor the name of the author. I read it in 1975 for an Independent Reading Class (an easy "A" and a requirement for graduation which I needed 3000 pages for and "A")....
I searched while we lived for 5 years in the UK in their many book stores (old and new) but without success... 30 years after I read the book we lived in the Cotswolds and I had remembered the referencing "Cotswold Sheep" (only once) in the book... this is how much of an impression this book made on me in High School....it holds a place near and dear in my heart...
I enjoyed the story very much and was excited to find it was part of a trilogy and I bought the other books....
  • This series was recommended among their favourite books by one of my loved authors.(Unfortunately I do not at present remember either the author-apart from the fact it was a woman- or the venue in which the "Favourite Book List" appeared. It could have been The Week magazine or it might have been on Facebook's Good Read page. Either way I ordered the books and have enjoyed the first two and am now on my third.
Historical details of how people lived in the times of Mary Tudor, through Elizabeth and the Civil War, right up to the Restoration, are accurately given and explained through the eyes of ordinary people who come and go through the House. Everyone has a tale to tell and we learn the story of the house through the effect events have on various lives. Norah Lofts was one of my favourite authors when I was a teenager in the 60s. I am sure I must have read this trilogy then but I remembered almost nothing and I am enjoying it afresh with different eyes today.
  • I read all the books in this series at least 40 years ago. I've reread them time after time. Now that I can no longer read due to macular degeneration, I'm looking forward to listening to them on audible. I just wish The Lute Player by Z Oprah Lofts was on audible.
  • My mother introduced me to this book more than 40 years ago, and despite her age, "The Town House" is just as captivating as the first time I read it. If you like to learn history (I'm a history buff and the author stays true to actual events), and if you like to completely immerse yourself in a book, read "The Town House," and then run, as fast as you can, to your device and order "The House at Old Vice" and "The House at Sunset." Like me, you will read them over and over
  • Enjoyed this story a lot. Story progresses at a good pace with enough time and description to develop the characters but also keeps the storyline moving along so as to maintain interest. I did feel the end was too rapidly done and with disappointing detail. I actually had to reread it to make sure I didn't miss anything while blinking.

  • An enthralling story set in a time so different to ours that it beggars belief.
Very well written so it was head to put it down. Am so looking rorward to the next book in the series.
  • Great service. Nice surprise, the hardcover is very attractive 1959 print "don't make them like that anymore". Will be looking for other 2 volumes of the trilogy. EXCELLENT😁
