"We took two books to Yellowstone-this was one and it was a gem(the other was A Ranger's Guide to Yellowstone Day Hikes-equally invaluable). The maps and descriptions were a tremendous help. We read through the book while planning our trip and weren't disappointed in anything that we did. We kept it close at hand in the park the whole week. There wasn't a day that we didn't consult it. Now that we're home, I look at the dog-eared little book and am so thankful for the reviews I read about this book and decided to order it to plan our trip."

Yellowstone Treasures The Traveler Companion to the National Park Janet Chapple 9780970687388 Books Reviews

  • We took two books to Yellowstone-this was one and it was a gem(the other was A Ranger's Guide to Yellowstone Day Hikes-equally invaluable). The maps and descriptions were a tremendous help. We read through the book while planning our trip and weren't disappointed in anything that we did. We kept it close at hand in the park the whole week. There wasn't a day that we didn't consult it. Now that we're home, I look at the dog-eared little book and am so thankful for the reviews I read about this book and decided to order it to plan our trip.
  • I bought this after reading positive reviews. I found it difficult to use. It wasn't easy to distinguish must visit sites versus everything else. The chapters start with a short (I mean short) overview of the area, then it lists sites by mile markers. So for example the thermal area would be .5 mile _____. .75 mile ________. I found to really difficult to get my arms around what we wanted to see and what we could pass up. I wish I'd gone with a more traditional book. There was a lot of interesting information in the back of the book so it could be a useful 'addition' to another guide book.
  • I buy this book as well as Fodor's Campass American Guides for Yellowstone and Grand Teton. I read Fodor's book a lot more than this one. Found Fodor's maps more useful for advance routes planning. The book also offers clear explanation of places to see and dine. However, I am not use to travel books that have long descriptions, paragraphs after paragraphs. In Asia, we have travel books that really are great "planning tools", a lot more user friendly and efficient. They recommend alternative routes and time spent, provide many highlights that are so straight forward and easy to follow. Offer lots of useful tips on transport, shopping, dining etc., making my planning a lot more simple and so efficient. Can't find any English travel book that is so simple and user friendly like the ones I use in Asia. Recommend Fodor's book for advance planning, especially for people who like to read less. The Janet Chappel one is very detailed, many text, more suitable for people who like to read into every details and plan in a very detailed manner.
  • We're going for a two-day trip and wanted a definitive guide...this book does have it all but be warned as it states in the Preface "this book is intended for the relatively unhurried first-time visitors and the many thousands who return to explore anew." She specifically says "a few days, a week or two" as her time frame. We needed something a little more wham-bam-thank you ma'am.

Had this been in the book description I certainly would have purchased the Compass American Guide by Fodor's (which I did anyway!)
  • You simply must have this book if you are taking a self guided tour of Yellowstone. Reset your odometer at major park intersections, and the author will precisely locate and explain turnoff sites along the way. The book has ample maps and explanatory sidebars as well as travel advice to the park. We bought a couple of guide books before our trip, but this was our go-to resource in the park.
  • A great book to help plan your vacation, and to learn about history, geology and wildlife of the area before your trip. You can just skim through the "must see" sights first and then read up later if you are in a crunch for planning. We highlighted the "must sees" in the "Yellowstone Treasures" book first and then highlighted the same "must sees" in National Geographic's "Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks Road Guide". We then used post-it book mark tabs to mark the pages being used in both books for the day for easy navigating. One trip tip we missed was to view the Grand Prismatic Spring from a higher outlook. For the best view, it might be best to hike up to the Fairy Falls outlook and view from above as steam obscures view from ground level.
  • Just returned from Yellowstone. This book was wonderful. I recommend reading it before you go, then flag page 14 (with the map that gives page numbers for each segment of the park) and take it along for reference. We were able to get great pictures of Grand Prismatic Spring because of her suggestion to climb the hill skirted by Fairy Falls trail. Although we didn't need the info, I was impressed that she described the wheelchair access of the various trails/boardwalks.
  • Amazing book to review before your visit, but also to keep with you during it! Upon entering the park we were given a map, but this book has so many more detailed maps of each area that were SO helpful! I was responsible for planning a day and a half worth of activities for my group, and this book helped me to not disappoint! It explains EVERY single feature of the park, split up according to region. Seriously, check this book out and your friend will think you know it all. Can't wait to go back to the park--according to the book, I missed out on A LOT.
